The European Union signed the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act) in June 2024. The EU AI Act is the first binding regulation on AI. It is groundbreaking legislation designed to regulate artificial intelligence across the European Union. It sets a common standard for the use and supply of AI systems in the EU and effectively sets the standard for global AI governance. Its main objective is to establish a legislative framework that balances technological innovation with the protection of fundamental rights and public safety. The Act classifies AI applications into four risk categories: unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal. Each category is subject to specific rules or restrictions.
To gain access to the EU market for high-risk AI systems, organisations must meet the requirements and obligations of the EU AI Act.
It’s essential that organisations developing, deploying or using AI systems are aware of their obligations and the timelines under the EU AI Act and have implemented the required measures according to EU standards.
The EU AI Act became legally binding on August 1, 2024. However, the requirements in the act will begin to take effect gradually over time with a phased roll out. Key milestones include:
